You can read a short biography about them and see if you think there are enough common interests to pursue a date. Most dating sites will also encourage the two of you to email or speak a bit before the initial meeting. There is also less of a risk for rejection and easier to communicate and set up a meeting. For these reasons many people find online dating a "safer" option.

There are also a lot of predators out there who can use online dating for their own selfish reasons. Most of these you will probably be able to filter out through the process, but it's best to be sure about the actual safety of meeting a stranger. Take extra precautions when using these dating services. Don't give out your personal information and be extra suspicious of anyone who seems to be digging a little too deep and too soon. It might be very exciting and hard to wait, but do not rush into anything- if it is right then the other person will also wait and not rush you into anything that you are not ready for.

Protect yourself by meeting at public places and do not allow yourself to get into a situation where you are alone with the other person. Most other people will have as good of intentions you do, but you need to look out for number one and build trust- not count on it.
