Relationships

Relationships can be the most rewarding experience in life, but relationships can also be the most troubling.

Relationships and The Modern Era

In the good old days, people generally had one relationship in their life. They would meet someone who they thought would make a good mate and marry young, usually after a relatively short courtship. In small towns it often still happens that way, but most people nowadays will have a series of relationships before they decide to settle down for good with one special person. Of course there are still people who do not have many relationships, preferring to stay the course until that perfect individual shows up. But there is a lot to be said for going through a few relationships before getting married.

People Change

Marriages break up for many reasons, but one that is often cited is simply that they or their mate has changed. This was especially common when the average age to marry was much younger. Very young adults can count on a fair amount of change before they realize who exactly they are and what works best for them. But, of course, everyone continues to change. And so the question with lasting relationships is how to find that mate that you feel you can change with. Because not only will individuals change, but the relationship itself will change. Relationships go through many phases in general and circumstances in life will also produce changes. Some changes are for the better while others will be for the worse. But those of us need to learn to expect changes and use them as guide through the relationship. Acceptance of change means paving a smooth road for the years yet to come. Realizing that some changes have occurred that are actually for the worse means being able to communicate enough with your partner to bring them to light and try together to put them back into a positive light.
