It seems that we are getting more and more obsessed with celebrities and their private lives. We want to know what they are doing when, and who with!

Why are we so interested in celebrity relationships?

The lives of the rich and famous can seem very glamorous and exciting compared to our own. We follow their every move. We don't know them personally of course and will almost certainly never meet them, but we are only too happy to shell out a few dollars to look at pictures of celebrities strolling out of supermarkets, picking up there kids from school, or a cross dressing prostitute from Sunset Strip.

Some of us avidly follow the trials and tribulations of celebrity relationships. To watch some of the most beautiful and richest people in the world be subjected to a humiliating and public infidelity or dumping is strangely compelling. Watching them experience the pain relationships can bring almost humanizes them and helps us to identify with them. We think they lead the perfect lives but for a minute they can look vulnerable and even out of control.

Is it healthy?

There are those intellectuals out there that turn their noses up at magazines filled with the gossip of celebrity relationships. They are indifferent to the split of Bennifer, the fights between Nick and Jessica and the shocking split of the seemingly perfect Hollywood couple: Brad and Jennifer. There are the psychologists out there that brandish our obsession with celebrity relationships as unhealthy.

Of course, as with anything in life, a person can become unhealthily obsessed with celebrity relationships. The extreme of this can lead to stalking and attempted murder in some rare cases. However for most of us it is just harmless fun or escapism. Looking at celebrities facing the same woes we experience, watching celebrity relationships come unstuck, can remind us that true happiness is extremely hard to achieve all of the time even if someone would appear to have it all.
